What did you want to be when you were growing up? I wanted to be an artist when I was growing up. I’d say my major and minors somewhat align with that because I love to be creative, even if its not in the visual arts, and my studies have allowed me to do just that.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am a BA Communications: Media Studies major with minors in Music and Journalism. I decided on these study focuses because of my time working at The Northern Star newspaper. I was originally a Music: Composition Studies major in my first year, but the introduction of a Music minor allowed to me change my major while continuing my journey in the NIU School of Music in a way that suited my interests the best.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about playing music at NIU is the dedication of my peers and mentors around me. You can tell from the quality of music we create together, we are all focused on helping each other while also building up ourselves to our highest potential.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? I have connected with other students at NIU by being social with classmates before and after lectures and by interacting with people I see regularly in my routines.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities? I am very involved at the Northern Star, NIU’s student newspaper organization. I have been a writer and editor at the paper, and I have found ways to create a balance between my contributions there and my dedication to the school of music along with my other coursework. The Northern Star has been very helpful with aiding me in my career and life decisions while also offering me great opportunities to collaborate with like-minded peers.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why?  One of my favorite instructors has been Dr. Thomas Bough. I have been in music ensembles that he conducts, including the NIU Wind Ensemble and the Huskie Marching Band. Very early on during my college career I had very insightful meeting with Dr. Bough about how I can best develop my practicing habits in order to grow as a musician and best benefit the ensemble. The knowledge and advice that Dr. Bough gave me early on still rings true a couple years later and I will always be thankful for how he has inspired me to grow as a musician and as a person.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose NIU to study and play music because it was very close to home for me while still offering a prestige education. Many of my music instructors from Oswego High School attended NIU, and they gave it much high praise which greatly influenced my college decision.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  My favorite spot on campus is the Holmes Student Center. It is a very iconic landmark for NIU right up there with Altgeld Hall, and it houses many cool places to eat, have fun or study all in one place.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?  I would tell a student who is currently applying to colleges to not put all their eggs in the same basket and be open to change, even after you start your college journey. It is always okay to start as an undecided major or change your field of study down the line because there are many counselors who will be there to guide you through your decisions and what course you are interested in even if that means making big changes.

What do you do to relax or recharge?  I play a lot of video games and watch a lot of movies in my free time. They help me relax and de-stress after a long day of class or working.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Coming to college, I’ve had to learn to manage my time and schedule very differently. In high school, most things have predetermined times and schedules to keep students on track and most daily schedules are very consistent. In college I’ve gained a lot of experience with setting up times for meeting with professors and student peers through email and calendar apps while also being able to pick my own course schedule for each semester. Each day of the week could be a unique schedule with different places I have to go to at different times, and I still double check my calendar regularly to make sure I don’t forget to do something or be somewhere during the day.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?  I wanted to be a writer when I was young. The reason is that I found it attractive to share feelings and exchange thoughts through writing. One day, when I first met a cello at a concert hall, I realized that music expressed emotions in a different way than writing. Talking about me through music and telling the composer’s story through performance showed me a new path to becoming a storyteller. And for the same reason, I now enjoy sharing emotions and thoughts in different ways through studying recording art.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? Music Performance (Cello) and Recording Arts

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU?
It helps students experience a variety of music, not just one of kind.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? Dr. Brian Hart, Music History

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I have decided to study at NIU because it has a curriculum that not only provides students with performance but also various liberal arts subjects and convocations with guest artists to help students understand music more broadly and deeply.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?: My major is wind band conducting. I decided to study to become a better educator for my students.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU?
My favorite thing about studying and playing music at NIU is the community. The professors are brilliant and are always willing to help. The students are hard working and humble. I appreciate the supportive atmosphere and the opportunity to pursue my interests.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? While we make music, we connect in another level that I find truly special. Making music with other people is truly the highlight of my day. I have seen growth in myself as a person and musician, as well as other people.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? I gained respect for my professor Dr. Thomas Bough, who is my primary mentor for my major. He models hard work ethic and inspires the ensemble to achieve excellence. I pick up new rehearsal techniques and lessons at every rehearsal.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose to study at NIU because of the inclusion of diversity in music and race. I feel safe and advocated as a minority in my field.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? : My advice is to seek wise counsel from older people you trust. Be organized in your research and have thorough understanding of your goals and places you apply to. Schedule a lesson with the professor.

What year did you start working at NIU? 2021
Where is your hometown? Manhattan, Ill.
Where do you live now? Chicago
Where did you attend college and what degree(s) have you received? MM, DePaul University, BM/PC, Eastman School of Music

What do you like about working at NIU?
 The students!

What advice would you give to students currently attending NIU?
The music world is incredibly small. The people who you are working with now, both peers and teachers, will come into your life again in the professional world. Always start by being kind and keeping your side of the street clean. This applies to your level of preparation for ensemble rehearsals and lessons, and your attitude towards your professors and peers.

What do you hope students take away from your class? My hope is that my students will come away from lessons feeling like they have gained the tools to be their own teacher.

Who has influenced your professional path? I would not have pursued this career if it weren’t for Susanna Gaunt, Julie Landsman and Gail Williams. That said, I think the inspiration for my freelance career path was inspired by my former teacher, Jim Smelser.

Tell us about any professional ensembles/groups you are a part of and/or some of your favorite professional musical experiences. One of my favorite musical memories is a concert I played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra after an agreement was reached and their strike was over in the spring of 2019. Before the first piece, the audience started clapping and it felt like their applause lasted 20 minutes. That moment has a vivid home in my memory. The response was definitely clear – people need music. People need an escape from their lives. That memory has come back as a voice that says “what we do is so important” whenever I need it.

What community organizations are you involved in? I am a Brass Instructor at The People’s Music School, an after school music program in Chicago that is modeled after the El Sistema philosophy of instruction

What do you do to relax or recharge? : I love taking walks around my neighborhood (I’m a sucker for holiday decorations of any sort), baking vegan treats and watching a good TV Drama (currently very invested in American Crime Story season 3.)

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path? I had no idea what I wanted to be when I was growing up! As I went through school, I kept playing trombone in band and eventually starting taking it more seriously in high school. Going into music made the most sense for me, and I don’t really knew what else I would do.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I am double majoring in music education and trombone performance. I chose to major in music because I love helping people and I love performing.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite part of NIU is the trombone quartet I am a part of. The other chamber ensembles I have been in have been a lot of fun, and I feel lucky to be in a group that is working at such a high level.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie? I joined the Penguin Players this semester and it has been so fun so far! I have never been a part of a musical, so I am learning a lot from the artists and everyone in the group. I am happy to meet other students outside of the music building, and other people in the community.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I came to NIU because there are so many different ensembles working at high levels. I love the performance spaces that are available to music students, and that I still have the resources of a big university.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? One of my favorite professors is Dr. Lucia Matos. She taught my music theory class and I am in her conducting class right now. She is so musical and has so much to teach everyone. She is also very helpful and kind when you make a mistake in class.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it? My favorite spot when I first moved to DeKalb was the lagoon because it is a nice place to walk around, and I think looking at the geese is always funny. Since there are less restrictions on campus this year, I have really been loving being in the music library. My other favorite place to go on campus is the courtyard in Gabel Hall because of all of the flowers.
