Huskie Spotlight: Anna Rockman, ’25, Music Performance

Anna Rockman

What did you want to be when you were growing up?  I have always wanted to be a stay at home mom. I would like to do this while also playing in a regional orchestra.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I am a music performance major and I am pursuing music because I believe it is truly essential to for humans to thrive and I can’t imagine my life without it.
What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? The sense of community among all of the students and professors.
How have you connected with other students at NIU? I have connected with other students through ensembles and other classes.Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? Scott Metlicka (flute professor) and Thomas Bough (director of bands). They are both so invested not only in helping me to be a better musician but also to help me be a better person.
Why did you choose NIU to study music? Because of the diverse musical opportunities from so many amazing professors.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? My favorite spot on campus is one of the benches by the lagoon that looks over the water at Altgeld Hall. It’s magical at night when the stars shine in the water.
What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? Do what feels right. Don’t take anyone else’s opinion. This is your decision and you are the one who will be living it. So make sure you will be happy.
What do you do to relax or recharge? I like to hang out with friends or write in my journal.
Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? I have had to learn how to manage my time differently.
