What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I am working on a master’s in music, specializing in piano performance.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about studying music at NIU is the opportunity to learn and grow alongside other musicians. I’ve learned so much just by playing in ensembles, listening to in-class discussions, or accompanying students for their jury and recital pieces. I have gained some really valuable experiences here at NIU, and I’m grateful for those opportunities to mature as a pianist and musician.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose to study music at NIU because I had a great experience during the application and audition process. I felt very welcomed at NIU when I came to audition and felt that the staff and instructors strove to provide a personal experience for me.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? One of my favorite professors has been Dr. [William] Goldenberg. He teaches upper-level piano lessons. Dr. Goldenberg has always been very caring and kind. He offers excellent feedback and encouragement!

What do you do to relax or recharge? I enjoy spending time outdoors!

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? My major is music performance.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? Unfortunately for personal reasons I haven’t connected with too many students at NIU. I have a busy family life.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? Because my husband told me it was a great school of music, and he was right!

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why?  My cello teacher Cheng-Hou Lee. He is a very supportive teacher, and he works very hard to get the maximum potential out of each of his students.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community?  The lake.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Practice with more discipline.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax I just like to listen music!

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Since fifth grade band, I knew that I wanted to do something in music. As I grew up, being a band director seemed like the best job for me since I love music and I want to help students and be a role model for them. I chose to pursue this as a major at NIU.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? My major is Music Education with an instrumental emphasis. I chose this because I want to be a middle school band director when I graduate.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about NIU is getting to play in so many different ensembles and work with other amazing musicians and teachers.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? Being in the same classes and ensembles as other students at NIU is really how I got to get to know everyone around me.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? One of my favorite instructors is Dr. [Christine] D’Alexander. She teaches Intro to Music Ed, String Tech, and High School Methods, so she has seen me grow over the years as I took these classes. You can tell that she really enjoys her work and cares about all of her students’ success.

Why did you choose NIU to study music?  I chose NIU because it is close to home for me and my father went to school here. I also knew that Northern’s music ed program is really strong compared to the other schools in the area.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  The best spot is the East Lagoon, it’s just such a great place to decompress and walk around in between classes.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?  Go to the college with the best program for you, because that is what matters most. Campus culture and dining hall food are important, but you really want to be sure that the program you will be going through for four to five years suits who you are and will facilitate your growth the best.

What do you do to relax or recharge? I just like to listen to music and hang out with other music majors to decompress. Sometimes all you need is a relaxed night to recharge for the rest of the week.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Manage my time. College is really different from high school where there is less hand holding and you need to be responsible for yourself because other people will not keep you on track. You need to be on top of all of your assignments and other commitments in order to be successful.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?  Growing up I wanted to be an author, a detective and even a paleontologist. Finally around sixth grade, after starting band, I realized I wanted to be a music teacher. Today as a junior in college, teaching music is still my passion and goal.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I am majoring in music education. I have a love for music and have always believed it can create a difference in everyone’s life. I want to help children discover the beauty of music.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? I love the community that is NIU. Everyone is always willing to help others and work with each other.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? I have made sure to be a person that others like to be around by saying hi to people when I see them in the hall, making sure I know their names and using it. I try to be respectful and accepting of everyone even if I don’t have classes with them or hang out with them outside of school.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities?  I am the current recruitment chair for NAFME, this has given me the opportunity to work with other music education majors and get leadership experience.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? The flute professor Scott Metlicka is one of my favorite professors at NIU. His teaching style fits my learning style really well, he is really understanding but is also pushing me to work hard and improve as a musician and student.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose NIU because it felt like a place that I could feel at home in.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  My favorite spot on campus is the break room in the Music Building. I have spent a lot of hours in there doing homework, talking, and playing cards with people. A lot of good memories have been made in there.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? Keep your options open and do what feels best for you!

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax I hang out with friends or go for walks. I also enjoy painting.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Coming to college I learned to schedule time for meals, I also began making lists of things way more often than I used to. I currently have about seven sticky notes on my closet door with assignments and meetings I have coming up.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?  I wanted to be in the medical field in some capacity, but not sure what.  Once I earned my associate’s degree in occupational therapy, I worked in a school for four years.  I loved every minute of what I did, but something was missing.  I figured out that I needed my own classroom.  So I came back to NIU to earn my bachelors in vocal music education.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? The ensembles are so talented.  They are well rehearsed, well prepared to play anything, and they collaborate so much.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? I am a member of Tau Sigma, the transfer student honor society here at NIU.  That has connected me with students from all over campus.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities?  Tau Sigma has been so wonderful.  I get a chance to meet students from all over campus and share our experiences here in the Music Building.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? Dr. Mary Lynn Doherty teaches our Middle School and High School Methods classes for the vocal majors. It is nice to have some as experienced as her share her knowledge of what students need from us as teachers.  It is invaluable.  Dr. Eric Johnson is the Director of Choral Activities here at NIU and also teaches specific classes, such as choral arranging, choral conducting, among many others.  He is so knowledgeable about how to lead an ensemble and the work it takes to get a group ready to sing.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? NIU has the best music program I could find in any of the Illinois schools, as well as it is near my home in Freeport.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  When the weather is nice, it is so nice to sit out on the lawn by the library.  Such a rich open space with very little distractions.  When the weather is a little rough, the Music Library is where I spend my time for the same reasons.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?  You don’t need to know what you want to do right away.  Follow your gut and try new things.  Join music organizations as they take students from any discipline.  GET INVOLVED!!!

What do you do to relax or recharge?  I enjoy bowling and playing competitive softball.  Also, taking my dog for long walks is a good way to disconnect from things.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? I learned to love myself differently. I learned that my strength areas are good enough for me.  Don’t sweat the little things and keep your eyes on the big picture.
