What did you want to be when you were growing up?  Since I was a child, my dream has always been to become a pianist and teach at a university. Today, I’m still chasing my dream.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? Here in NIU, I am studying to get a master degree in piano performance as well as the music performance certificate. I enjoy the process of becoming familiar with music pieces and sharing my interpretation with the audience through my performance.

Why did you choose NIU to study music?  NIU is a good school to study because of its good reputation and its wonderful professors in the department. Not only can I learn the piano performance skills, but also I can take some academic classes to improve my music literacy as well as my ability to comprehend music.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? My favorite professor here is my piano instructor, Dr. William Goldenberg. He exhibits a high degree of professionalism in piano performances as well as a superlative level of piano instructions. He is very patient, and he always can make students understand the music in many interesting ways and words.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it? My favorite spot on campus is the East Lagoon, where there is a very beautiful view and where many kinds of animals reside.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? As long as I could remember I’ve always wanted to be a musician. As a young man I thought all the girls liked drummers, so I wanted to play the drums, however in middle school we didn’t have any trombone players and six drummers… and the rest is history. I am following my dreams, and I will achieve them.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I am a Graduate Assistant in the Jazz Studies field. Professor [Reggie] Thomas as been instrumental in my development as both a musician, and I felt spending time under is tutelage learn to teach would be invaluable. I also have been looking forward to studying under Professor [Tom] Garling improve my skills at jazz trombone and arranging.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? The students in the School of Music at NIU are sensational. Both as musicians and people. I haven’t had this much fun working hard ever in my life. It’s not just a school for us. We are all healing from this pandemic together and it’s brought us close together

How have you connected with other students at NIU? Great! I call tell I’ve already made life long friends. One being my good friend Arman: incredible musician, even better human being.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities?  I am the graduate representative for the DEB (Diversity, Equality, and Belonging) Committee. I have had a great time not only learning about how NIU is combating systemic racism, and bigotry, while also learning about equality in a ways that I have never before.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose NIU to study music, because of Prof. Thomas, and Prof. Garling. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? Prof. Thomas has been my favorite instructor. He teaches Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combo, and quite a few other classes in the spring. I have worked in ensembles with some of the best jazz orchestra directors in the world. Rodney Whitaker, Etienne  Charles, Christopher Dorsey, and quite a few more. The way that Prof. Thomas approaches the music so organically and unapologetically honest. He’s taught me so much in just three months. I’m excited to see what else I will learn while I’m here

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  My favorite spot on campus is the Music Library. In order to get all the information I need to write papers and learn arrangements of music. The Music Library has what seems to be an endless source of information on so many topics I’m interested in. There is also the fact that if I want to get away from  all the work of being a graduate assistant, sitting in silence while reading a book is quite tranquil.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? We would love to have you, but come ready to work. We are all trying to improve and hope for your success.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Cope with stress, and the anxiousness that I have developed over the pandemic. It’s been great having so many amazing people around. I take personal time each day just to check on my mental health, and it makes all the difference.

What do you do to relax or recharge?  I call my momma, and we chat. I also like to listen to Stevie Wonder and crochet.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? When I was growing up, I wanted to be a veterinarian for the longest time. That interest diminished a bit next to music in high school but, I still entered NIU with the intentions of animal medicine. I’ve now honed in my focus to herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), in hopes of helping with conservation efforts or research.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? I’m a biological sciences major with two minors, in music and chemistry. I decided on biology so I could work with animals while my music minor helps me stay connected to my passion.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about studying music at NIU is how much I’m able to do despite being a music minor. The school invites anyone with an interest or passion to join ensembles and take private lessons. I’ve realized there’s a whole new level of musicianship at NIU, and it drives me to practice whenever I can. I have a lot of freedom in what pieces I’m able to play and the professors are really accommodating of my major and coursework, while still giving me pieces that challenge me.

How have you connected with other students at NIU: I’ve connected with students at NIU by living in a dorm my first year, taking a couple in person classes, and joining some extra-curriculars. Music is definitely a HUGE factor in how I have so many friends.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities? I’m currently involved in the Huskie Marching Band and the Committee for the Preservation of Wildlife. Marching band is the main reason why I know so many students on campus, and definitely helped me come out of my shell as a college student. The CPW is to help me connect more with my career focus as well as give back to the community.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I choose NIU to study music partially because it’s close to home for me but mainly because it’s so flexible in what I’m able to do with music. I’ve joined a variety of ensembles and learned various instruments. I love how much I’m able to do despite it not being my major, as well as the variety of genres that are performed. I’ve learned so much about world music and culture from seeing different groups perform in the concert hall.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? One of my favorite professors has been JeongSoo Kim. She teaches piano lessons, and has been a big influence on my musical and academic growth. She always has positive energy for my lessons and takes the time to check in on my personal life and academics. She also encourages me to strive to do my best in everything, but also to take time for myself. She helped me explore musical levels I didn’t even know existed, all while wearing a smile on her face.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it? My favorite spot on campus is the lagoon behind the Music Building. I always go there when I need to clear my mind or if I have free time. I love the wildlife that I get to see and it always helps me take a step back and breathe.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?  To any student applying to college, don’t be afraid to connect with your department of study! They want to help you and will have a variety of resources for you to use, as well as know about opportunities to get you started on your career.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Something that I had to learn to do differently after coming to college is time management. I’ve always struggled with that and I managed to scrape by in high school but the new level of independence really exposing things like that. I’ve found I have to chunk out time for different classes and work ahead, but also make time for my mental health. That’s something that usually gets pushed to the side but mental health affects all areas of your life.

What do you do to relax or recharge? To relax and recharge, I like to play video games, nap, knit, or play the piano.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? When I was little I wanted to be a band teacher. In my life so far, I studied instrumental music education and received my bachelor’s degree ,then I taught orchestra, choir, and general music for five years.  Now I am working towards my Master’s Degree in Wind Conducting.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
Master’s Degree in Wind Conducting. I wanted to go for this degree so that I could learn how to become a better communicator on the podium therefore helping me become a better band teacher.

What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about studying music at NIU is the collaboration and support that I have from the faculty and staff in the department.  I also really enjoy working with the different ensembles and working towards becoming a more well rounded musician.

How have you connected with other students at NIU? I get to work with many students here on campus though my work with and teaching of the different ensembles.  My position is great because I get to work with students who are both in the department and other parts of campus.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extra-curricular activities?  I am currently the graduate assistant/field technician for the Huskie Marching Band here on campus.  I think it has added to my experience as a Huskie in a positive way.  I was able to join the students on campus during band camp and meet new people.  Also being able to go to all the home games and support the football team has been  blast and I really feel like part of the campus community.

Why did you choose NIU to study music? I like that NIU music has a conservatory style curriculum.  It really gives me a chance to take a deep dive into my course of study and I have many opportunities to practice and perform in front of various ensemble.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course do they teach? I would have to say Dr. [Thomas] Bough.  When I am in a lesson by myself, group lesson, or even in front of an ensemble I can tell that he really cares about me and my progress as a student.  He always encourages me to ask questions and try different motions in conducting but also helps me grow as a professional.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?  I think my favorite spot is the Concert Hall.  I love how the hall looks and feels and seeing the organ makes me awestruck every time.  I also love that every time I’m in there I hear music become alive and powerful, even in the soft, subtle moments.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? Make sure it feels like home.  This could potentially be your home for the next four years.  So you want to feel happy, confident, and comfortable in everything you do on campus.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Time management.  In college I had to learn how to be responsible for my own schedule.  This includes both studying and work.  It’s important to take time for yourself and learn how to manage your calendar and time in a way that it works for you, not against you.

What do you do to relax or recharge? My favorite thing to do when I am trying to relax and recharge is to put on comfy clothes, wrap myself in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and a snack and play Animal Crossing if I’m alone or any other game (tabletop or video) if my husband is with me. I also like to go long distance hiking through national and state parks.
