Julia ChoJulia Cho (Playwright) – Julia Cho “Labels are the way we make the world convenient” says playwright Julia Cho. Somewhat inconveniently, she rejects “Korean American” and identifies herself as simply as “American.” Born in 1975 to Korean immigrant parents on the West Coast, Cho explains “It was a very porous household. For me to say that being of Korean origin influences my work is the same as saying being a woman or being American influences my writing.” She cites Caryl Churchill, Chekhov, Chay Yew, and Sarah Ruhl as her “playwriting heroes.” Charles Isherwood, in his review of her 2016 play “Aubergine,” praises her
“perceptive sense of the invisible barriers that mysteriously spring up between people, and the equally mysterious impulses that bind them together.” Language and mortality are important to Cho. “The Language Archive,” a play about the death of languages, combines two of her favorite themes. Cho is a graduate of Amherst College, New York University and the Juilliard Playwrights. She teaches at UC Berkeley.

Next semester at NIU, you can catch her direction of Sarah Ruhl’s “Melancholy Play.”

She is a certified yoga instructor at the 200-hour level, and recently became certified in Mental Health First Aid. Working as a director and intimacy coordinator, Emily utilizes foundational principles created by theatrical intimacy education. These consent-based practices rely on the foundational understanding that consent is contextual, conditional, and revocable and include establishing and respecting boundaries, a de-loaded process, choreography, and documentation. As an actor, Emily has worked regionally on many stages, including: Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Next Act Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, and Allentown Shakespeare in the Park. Emily has also appeared on television in a national commercial for Batteries/Bulbs Plus, and regional commercials for Mills Fleet Farm, Sanford Brown University, and Walgreens. The production is directed by Matt O’Brien of GreatWorks Theatre Company.

“Hit the Wall” runs Feb. 4-6 and 10-12 in the School of Theatre and Dance

“Hit the Wall” runs Feb. 4-6 and 10-12 in the School of Theatre and Dance

The NIU School of Theatre and Dance presents “Hit the Wall” running February 4-6 and 10-12 in the Sally Stevens Players Theatre in the Stevens Building on NIU’s main campus.

It’s 1969, summer in New York, and Judy Garland is dead. Police raid the Stonewall Inn on June 28, sparking several days of protests and birthing the modern gay rights movement. We all think we know this story. Chicago playwright Ike Holter explodes this myth, using fictionalized characters to retell history and make it live again for a new generation of activists.

The show is directed by Ericka Ratcliff, the artistic director of Congo Square Theatre Company where she “works to amplify the mission of celebrating the complexities of Black life and culture on stage.”

Tickets are available online or by calling the Annette Johns Box Office at (815) 753-1600. NIU students can attend free of charge by pre-reserving their ticket.

Theatre and Dance faculty and staff members help SpaceX post-landing party take flight

Theatre and Dance faculty and staff members help SpaceX post-landing party take flight

On September 20, a SpaceX four-person crew who had spent three days in orbit splashed down off the Florida coast. One of those four crew members was Hayley Arceneaux, a 29-year old physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. When Hayley was 10 years old she was a patient at St. Jude’s. A bone cancer survivor, she is the first person with an internal prothesis in space.

After the splashdown, the Inspiration 4 crew celebrated not just the successful mission, but also that the mission had reached the goal of raising more than $200 million for St. Jude’s. At the party, revelers enjoyed the music of Collective Soul and Three Doors Down, and got to experience some soaring of their own, thanks to Vertigo, a theatrical effects company owned by NIU School of Theatre and Dance Technical Director and Head of Design and Technology Tracy Nunnally.

The company had been contacted just four days before the party with a request from the group hosting the event for SpaceX. Nunnally said his team, which includes School of Theatre and Dance Master Electrician Chris Kurszewski, was able to put the necessary equipment on a 53-foot trailer less than 22 hours after the initial request. They then booked last minute tickets to Orlando and were there to complete the necessary set up, programming and testing in about 12 hours to have it all ready in time.

The crew from Vertigo was there to fly the astronauts, St. Jude donors, members of the two bands, some VIPs and most importantly, some of the St. Jude children who were able to attend the event.

“I would not trade the pure joy and happiness experienced by these kids and their parents, as well as the sweet, amazing and generous people at SpaceX and St. Jude for anything in the world,” Nunnally said. “Our Vertigo crew worked from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Monday night [Sept. 20] and would not leave until everyone who wanted to fly had a chance to be trained and take a short flight across the stage.”
