The Northern Illinois University Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Wilbur Lin, assistant professor of music at NIU, will perform “Oratorio Without Words: Edward Elgar and Alice Mary Smith,” Monday, November 21 at 7 p.m. in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in NIU’s Music Building. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for non-NIU students, and NIU students are free of charge.
The program features Elgar’s “Prelude to The Kingdom, Op. 51” and Smith’s “The Masque of Pandora Overture”, “Andante for Clarinet and Orchestra” and “Jason, or The Argonauts and the Sirens Overture.”
Gregory Barrett, professor of music at NIU is featured soloist on clarinet for “Andante for Clarinet and Orchestra.”

Gregory Barrett, Professor of Clarinet in the School of Music was chosen to judge at the National Music Competition of Slovenia in March. Barrett was also in Europe to attend two performances of his arrangement, “Jean Sibelius/Gregory Barrett En Saga Septet.” (more…)

Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (hailed as the most-performed composer world-wide for the past seven years) congratulates NIU School of Music faculty member Gregory Barrett following performance of Barrett’s arrangement: Jean Sibelius “En Saga Septet,” at Arvo Pärt composer portrait concert given by members of Staatskapelle in Dresden, Germany on March 4. Every year since 2002, the Northern Illinois University School of Music has presented a day-long festival for clarinet players with a different theme. The 2018 Clarinet Cornucopia festival features “The French Belle Époque’” with guest artists Stefan Harg, clarinet and Katarina Ström-Harg, piano. The festival will be held Saturday, February 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. It is free to attend and clarinet players are invited to perform in the Clarinet Choir after registering at go.niu.edu/clarinet.
