NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

NIU School of Music graduate students in the Analytical Techniques in World Music course were set to present pieces as part of NIU’s annual World Music Festival. But with all concerts postponed due stay at home restrictions caused by the coronavirus, their performances were instead showcased on YouTube.

Here, are the pieces that would have been featured as part of Music in the Third Space, April 7.

In addition to hearing the music composed by each student, you can also hear them talking about their compositional framework, the concepts and many cross-cultural musical ideas penetrating their composition.

The composers are: Avery Attzs, Suwan Choi, Malik Brooks, Jenny Lynn Maier, Naizal Hargana, Matt Werstler, Glynnis White and Tyzz Tsern Wu.

Jui-Ching Wang, associate professor in the School of Music, on behalf of the students would like to thank the mentors who worked with them in the spring semester. Guest teachers: Essam Rafae, Jai Sovani, and Jeff Abell. School of Music faculty: Geof Bradfield, Fareed Haque and Gregory Beyer.
