Sinfonia Concerto Competition 2018 winner Manou Magdalena Chakravorty of Chicago will perform as special guest of Sinfonia at the spring concert May 1, 7:30 p.m. in NIU’s Boutell Concert Hall

The NIU Community School of the Arts is pleased to announce the schedule for spring recitals and concerts.  Solo and ensemble performances are featured on the stage of the Recital Hall and Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University starting on April 30 and continuing throughout May.  All NIU Community School concerts and recitals are free and open to the public.

Tues., April 30 – Symphonette performs a varied program of music arranged for string orchestra at 6 p.m. in Boutell Concert Hall.  Featuring youth musicians ages 8 – 16, this all strings ensemble is directed by Linc Smelser.

 Wed., May 1 – Sinfonia performs at 7:30 p.m. in Boutell Concert Hall.  This concert features 2018 Sinfonia Concerto Competition winner, cellist Manou Magdalena Chakravorty, performing Elgar’s Concerto in E Minor for Cello and Orchestra, 4th Mvt. with the youth orchestra.  Humperdinck’s Prelude to Hansel and Gretel and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D Major, Op. 107 “Reformation” complete an evening of symphonic treasures, conducted by Linc Smelser.

Sat., May 4 – The NIU Suzuki Strings violin graduation and group recital begins at 10 a.m. in Boutell Concert Hall.

Sat., May 4 – NIU Community School Showcase Recitals begin at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. in the Recital Hall.  Students who take private lessons on a variety of musical instruments at the Community School will perform solo pieces with an accompanist.

Sat., May 4 – Recitals continue as piano students of Georgia Price and Ann Chen perform at 3 p.m. and guitar students of Eric Schroeder play at 5 p.m.

Sat., May 4 – The NIU Community School Steelband directed by Yuko Asada and the NIUkulele Ensemble directed by Eric Schroeder perform in concert at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

Sun., May 5 – The Suzuki Cello students of Tom Cappaert perform at 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall

Thur., May 9 – The NIU Community School Guitar Ensemble directed by Quentin Dover performs in the Recital Hall at 8 p.m.

Mon., May 13 – This recital features the Suzuki piano students of Marilyn Montzka at 5 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

Sat., May 18 – The cello students of Linc Smelser perform at 10:30 a.m. in the Recital Hall.

Sat., May 18 – The Suzuki violin students of Ann Montzka Smelser and Laurie Rodriguez perform at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
