As NIU and the world around us deals with a global pandemic, artists continue to find ways to express themselves. In the College of Visual and Performing arts the learning and teaching hasn’t stopped, it’s simply evolved to meet the needs and limitations of the situation. Over the coming days, we’ll be featuring how NIU students, alumni and faculty in the arts are continuing to do what they love.
As part of a Shelter in Place concert, Liam Teague, professor of music and head of steelpan studies in the NIU School of Music virtually joined fellow faculty members Reggie Thomas, professor of music and head of jazz studies and Bobby Broom, associate professor of music. Liam was joined by his daughter Jeida Teague-Nunez and son, Jaden Teague-Nunez and recorded by his wife Lorena Nunez.

Liam Teague is professor of music and head of steelpan studies at Northern Illinois University, where he also directs the renowned NIU Steelband. Teague is also the recipient of an NIU Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professor Award.
Hailed as the “Paganini of the Steelpan”, his commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the steelpan has taken him to throughout the world, and he has received many awards from his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Humming Bird National Award (Silver) and the Ansa McAl Caribbean Award for Excellence.
