The latest album from Bobby Broom, associate professor of jazz guitar and jazz studies in the NIU School of Music, Notes of Thanks, a tribute to saxophonist Sonny Rollins, was featured in the July edition of Downbeat Magazine.
Broom first performed with Rollins at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1978 when Broom was in high school. Broom told Downbeat, “It was a wondrous thing. On some level, I understood the gravity of it. But I wasn’t looking at that experience in any kind of historical way. How can you when you’re 17?”
Notes of Thanks is Broom’s homage to Rollins, who passed away in May at age 95, just weeks after the album’s release date.
Notes of Thanks is available for download and on vinyl.
