The NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies is hosting a free viewing of the documentary Loot: A Story of Crime and Redemption, Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb.
A daring look at the underbelly of the global art market, LOOT exposes the criminal network that used child soldiers to violently raid Cambodian temples then delivered blood antiquities to the homes of billionaires and elite western museums. The story is deeply emotional, relying on former looters to tell their story and the top American detective to unravel a criminal network stretching from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the top of the Western art world.
A panel discussion will follow the film featuring Catherine Raymond, professor emerita of art history in the NIU School of Art and Design, Mitch Hendrickson, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Trude Jacobsen Gidaszewski, professor of anthropology at NIU.
