Music Huskie Spotlight
Huskie Spotlight: Paisley Stevens, ’24, Music Education
What did you want to be when you were growing up? When I was growing up, I wanted to be a professional ballet dancer. I pursued ballet throughout high school and did get to chance with some professional studios. While I ended up finding my passion in music education, I find myself applying a lot of my dance training to music!
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study? My major is music education. I had always been a band kid, and I began studying music in junior college after exploring different paths. I fell in love with the sense of community found through the power of music and found my passion for teaching.
What is your favorite thing about studying and/or playing music at NIU? My favorite thing about studying music at NIU is the opportunities for world music. I have had so many amazing experiences and learned so much from participating in world music ensembles and workshops, especially playing dizi in Chinese music ensemble and playing in the steelband.
How have you connected with other students at NIU? I’ve connected with other students through the close-knit nature of the music program here. I’ve also connected with other transfer students through social media— that’s how I found my roommate/now best friend!
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? One of my favorite professors is Dr. (Jui-Ching) Wang, who has taught too many courses to count. She taught my elementary music education course and is one of the instructors for Chinese Music Ensemble. Her passion to teach and share world music is inspiring and she truly wants the best for all of her students.
Why did you choose NIU to study music? I chose NIU to study music because of the variety of ensembles, affordability, and the connections and reputation NIU has within the music community, especially education. My professors at Joliet Junior College attended NIU and loved it, and I highly regard them!
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? My favorite spot in the community is probably Fushi Yami. It’s delicious and also a great atmosphere to relax and hang out. Me and my friends go there quite a lot.
What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges? I would suggest they visit not only the campus, but try to visit the department they’re interested in and connect with the students, and ask lots of questions!
What do you do to relax or recharge? To relax me and my roommate like to watch movies or listen to my record collection while we have a paint/craft night.
Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently? Something I have had to learn to do differently is how to meet new people. You really have to be willing to put yourself out there and get comfortable trying new things and reaching out to get to know people around you!
