NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

As NIU and the world around us deals with a global pandemic, artists continue to find ways to express themselves. In the College of Visual and Performing arts the learning and teaching hasn’t stopped, it’s simply evolved to meet the needs and limitations of the situation. Over the coming days, we’ll be featuring how NIU students, alumni and faculty in the arts are continuing to do what they love.

NIU School of Art and Design Graduate Research Assistant Amy Fleming had a special assignment for her photography students.

The title of the assignment is “This Is Our New Reality” and I challenged my ARTD 313 Beginning Photography students to make photographs about social distancing and how it is affecting their daily lives and their education. Each student had the opportunity to “take over” the NIU Photography Department Instagram page and post three to five photographs that they have taken on their phone while practicing social distancing and adjusting to our new reality. The students shared some amazing photographs that ranged from how they are adjusting to online learning, visiting friends and family from a distance, their thoughts and emotions during isolation, and even their day to day routine as essential workers.
