NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

The Student Composer Association of NIU (SCA) is in search of performers for a very special – and entirely student run – concert experience at NIU’s School of Music Recital Hall.

The concert involves a presentation of public-domain silent films with a live studio orchestra. All the scores will be new music written by NIU students, and the concert will be student-conducted.

In order to make this event happen, the NIU Student Composer Association is looking to assemble a small studio orchestra and several volunteer student conductors. The SCA hopes to have musicians committed to the Music and Film Project as early as possible. Conscious of how hectic the final month of a spring semester is for all students, SCA is working to make this event as seamless as possible. With enough performers, no individual would have to perform on more than one film score; so, they urge those interested in performing to recruit a friend or two.

Four composers have each selected a silent public domain short film. All of the films are under 20 minutes in duration.

The performance date is Saturday, April 27 at 3 p.m. Rehearsals will be held on Thursdays, April 4, 11, 18 and 25. The composers’ completed scores will be distributed to performers by the end of March.

Interested student performers should contact the SCA by  March 1, so they can determine what instrumentation they have to work with.
