CHOREGRAPHERS' NOTES

CHOREOGRAPHERS' NOTES

States of Change

Michel Rodríguez Cintra: Early in the creation process, the idea of water continued to resurface. The choreographer and dancers focused on their different states as a starting point to convey emotion and tension.

Remembering Who We Are

Sarita Smith Childs:  Remembering Who We Are is a journey to remember who we are; what we stand for;  what we can be to each other and ourselves; and how we can reclaim our joy and personal power.  It is an exploration of how we can resist overwhelming outside influences and to return to the empathy necessary to support our communities and ourselves

Movement IV – The Path to Remembrance: For Mick, is a special dedication to those loved ones and unknown, who have found the journey insurmountable. Please don’t ever think that this is the case. There are people all around you who care deeply about your well-being. Your life is infinitely important to your families, friends and communities.

If you are struggling, please reach out to those around you and NIU resources if you are a student or faculty member..

Kiavane Kelly

Kiavanae Kelly

Kiavanae Kelly says, “For as long as I can remember I always danced anywhere for different reasons whether happy or sad. I thank my mother for how far I’ve come considering her support on every little thing I did. She said I was creative and unique in my own way. Those were words I had never heard.  I didn’t know what they meant but they sounded special. Sometimes I could not find anything to smile about, so I’d bump the music and let my body take over. The more I grew up, the more I wanted to be free. Soon enough, I learned what my freedom outlets were; Christ, singing, and dancing. I‘ve run to Christ and singing at full speed with no limitation and now dance has opened an experimental door for me. I know I’ve told my story through dance before but not with technique, skill, and routine. With so much talent around me I wonder what kind of story I’m great at expressing.”
