DIRECTORS' NOTE

DIRECTORS' NOTE

Fifty years after the first publication, Ntozake Shange’s play holds a special place in our hearts and artistic lives. When we were in our twenties, we both performed in for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf. One in Trenton, New Jersey, the other in Bronxville, New York. We would not know each other or become colleagues until we were, let us say, more seasoned, but we agree the piece made indelible marks on us as women and artists.

for colored girls…provides a glimpse into the experiences of Black and Brown women through the eyes of the ladies in brown, yellow, purple, red, green, blue, and orange. Their stories range from joyous to sorrowful, with the entire cast as witnesses. Our interpretation of the play with six actors and four dancers as the chorus is a salute to the women who came before us–the importance of sisterhood for support and as a form of resistance. Our production opens and closes with rituals that do not represent specific cultural communities, but as moments of cleansing with sage, water, and breath to create new energy as they move through our difficult world.

From choreopoems about the power of self-love, entering adulthood, betrayal, and loss, this is a love story of sorts. Encouraging us to address the world’s chaos, forgive ourselves, and to find a “fierce” love for ourselves. We are honored for the opportunity to work with the next generation of artists.

We dedicate this production to our mothers Ann and Bea, grandmothers, and the women who paved a way for us including Joan W. Lewis, Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi, Carol Mitchell Leon, Judith Jamison, Ruby Dee, Juanita Lopez, Lynda Gravatt, Kathey Perkins, Ntozake Shange, and more. We salute you and thank you for ‘movin to the end of your own rainbows.’
