NIU’s Graduate Brass Quintet has been selected to compete in the first-ever National Brass Quintet Competition at the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, Texas, April 14-15. They are one of only nine collegiate brass quintets selected from all over the country.
Directed by Christopher Scanlon, assistant professor of trumpet and Brass Area coordinator at the NIU School of Music, the quintet’s members are:
- Dartagnan Stephen, trumpet
- Amos Egleston, trumpet
- Emma Hinkle, horn
- Omar Tlatelpa Nieto, trombone
- Stephen Adcock, tuba
Other universities whose brass quintets were selected include University of North Texas, University of Memphis, Baylor University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Guest artists at the competition include the US Army Brass Quintet, legendary tuba artist Daniel Perantoni who serves as provost professor of tuba at Indiana University, pre-eminent trumpeter Ronald Romm and Micah Killion who served as principal trumpeter of the US Army Brass Quintet for seven years and is now on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin School of Music.
