NAEA logoA strong contingent of faculty, alumni and students will represent the NIU School of Art and Design’s art and design education program at this year’s National Art Education Association conference in Chicago March 5-7.

Three members of the faculty are being awarded some of the highest honors in art education.

Doug Boughton, professor of art and design education, will receive the Viktor Lowenfeld Award for significant contributions to the field of art education. Kerry Freedman, professor of art and design education, will be presented the Elliot Eisner Lifetime Achievement Award. Kryssi Staikidis, professor and co-head of art and design education and  has been named the National Higher Education Art Educator of the Year.

Presenters at the conference include a host of NIU art and design education alumni including Meung Jung Yang, Eva Coker, Nicholas Leonard, Lisa Kay, Deborah N. Filbin, Steven Ciampaglia, Lisa Kastello, and Terre Layng Rosner.

Faculty members who are presenting include Boughton, Freedman and Staikidis, and Kelly Gross, assistant professor of art and design education.

Current students will also be part of presentations at the national conference.

Kathryn Sowinski will present as part of a forum on Reimagining and Expanding Art Education Inquiry. Jonathan Pruc will co present a lecture titled “Making the Visual Arts More Visual: Advocacy, Access and Innovation in Art Education.” Jenny Raia will co-present “Teaching in Real Time: Using Today’s Artists to Inspire Tomorrow’s Thinkers.” Jonathan Wor will present during a Working Papers in Art Education session. And, Sarah Greer, Carrie Carlson and Sowinski will present on the topic, “Art, Animals, and Materials in Posthuman Pedagogy.”
