NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

NIU’s School of Theatre and Dance presents The Glass Menagerie, February 7-11 at Huntley Middle School, 1515 South 4th St., in DeKalb.

One of the most famous plays in modern theatre, The Glass Menagerie catapulted renowned playwright, Tennessee Williams, to fame.

The Glass Menagerie puts us in the fickle memory of Tom Wingfield as he remembers crucial moments in his life and the lives of his washed-up, Southern belle mother Amanda, and tragically shy sister Laura. While Amanda tries to find meaning in her faded life, Tom longs to escape his floundering one.

Remembering (or perhaps misremembering) the golden years, Amanda recalls the time she had seventeen gentlemen-callers in a single night. Laura withdraws further into her own world knowing she will disappoint her mother with her non-existent prospects.

One evening, at the insistence of his mother and to the dismay of his sister, Tom invites over a casual acquaintance from work. This visitor turns all their worlds upside-down and consequently leaves Tom to carefully reconstruct the shards of shattered dreams and commit them to his memory forever.

Join us for this bewitching drama and the broken memories of that fateful night will linger as much in your mind as they do in Tom’s.
